Weight Watchers now over 1,000lbs lighter

Two groups of conscientious Weight Watchers have lost a combined weight of 1,254 lbs (89.5 stone)

Weight Watchers classes are now being held at Stirling Medical Centre and Cromwell Primary Care Centre meaning people are now able to attend the sessions at their local GP practice. Those eligible can be referred for the class by their GP and participate in the programme for 12 weeks, free of charge.

Stirling Medical started running Weight Watchers in January this year and have so far had 50 referrals from North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus. Six members of the group have achieved their 10 per cent weight loss goal with a total group loss of 758.5 lbs so far.

The group at Cromwell Primary Care Centre has been running since the end of March, with 36 referrals from the CTP. Nine people have achieved their five per cent weight loss goal with a total group loss of 495.5 to date.

Claire Press, who is part of the Stirling Medical Centre group, said: “I attended the Weight Watchers meeting after being referred by my GP. I have lost 21lbs in 14 weeks and I am really pleased with the results.

“I wanted to lose weight to feel healthier and to get back to a slimmer me, where I feel happy in myself. I am now half way to were I want to be and I will get there with the help of Debbie and the other members in the group. I will continue with this until I reach my goal then Debbie will still be there to support me while I keep it off.”

Local people can be referred to the classes by their GP. Referral criteria is used to establish if the scheme is appropriate for the individual. The classes are also open to the general public: Stirling Medical, Stirling Street, Tuesdays, 6pm to 7pm and Cromwell Primary Care Centre, Cromwell Road, Wednesdays 1pm to 2pm.Both groups are run by Debbie Elder.

Kelly Reddington of the Specialist Health Promotion Service, who oversees the programme, said: “Weight Watchers is a great way for people to lose weight with an easy to follow programme. The programme is designed not just for people to lose weight but for them to keep it off long term.

“We are thrilled with the progress that has been made so far by the participants, they have shown really determination and this has been reflected in their amazing weight loss.”
