Young victims of crime in North East Lincolnshire were given the chance to forget their worries this week.
On Tuesday, July 27 young victims and their families enjoyed a free day out at Pleasure Island, Cleethorpes thanks to North East Lincolnshire’s Youth Offending Service.
The event aimed to ensure that young victims of crime are the focal point in the criminal justice process. It was also about providing them with an opportunity to have some fun.
The Youth Offending Service is committed to increasing the level of support given to victims of youth crime.
North East Lincolnshire Council’s Youth Offending Service manager, Matt Clayton, said: “Many services and resources are aimed at offenders. Whilst spending time and effort supporting young people who offend is important; we must always remember that victims of crime have often suffered injury or trauma at some level and also require support.’
Portfolio holder for children’s services, councillor Tony McCabe, said: “Events like these are really important as it essential that these young victims of crime realise that they do not need to suffer in silence.
“Both the council and the Youth Offending Team are there to offer support to anyone who has been the victim of crime. We urge anyone who is suffering as a result of crime to come forward and speak to us.
“We hope to provide more events like these in the future and we are continually looking to improve the services we offer to young sufferers.”
The day began with 20 victims and their families taking part in a short personal safety workshop. Participants were given support and advice on how to prevent themselves becoming a victim of further crime and how to keep themselves safe. The group were then able to enjoy a free day in the park.
North East Lincolnshire’s Youth Offending Service, in partnership with Victim Support are planning a number of similar events to support young victims of crime. They also plan to deliver a range of educational events and workshops within schools which are aimed at prevention.
