Work has started on the first section of the carriageway resurfacing.
.For this work to be carried out, both Sea Road and Grant Street have been fully closed at their junctions with Alexandra Road. The work involves removing the existing surfacing, installing a reinforcement grid to strengthen the carriageway and then resurfacing.
This was originally planned to take three days, allowing Sea Road and Grant Street to be re-opened for the weekend, but the poor condition of the existing construction has meant that some additional work will be necessary to allow the reinforcement grid to be installed.
Because of the importance of weekend access to the Promenade the intention is to carry out sufficient works to allow Sea Road to be opened on Saturday and Sunday. It will then be closed again on Monday to allow the final surfacing to be applied. As always with work of this nature it is subject to weather conditions.
To gain access to Central and North Promenades, traffic is diverted via Brighton Street slip road. This diversion is for access only and all traffic will need to exit the Promenade by the same route. Access to the Grant Street area is via a local diversion along Prince's Road.
All other side roads remain open but signed to take account of the one way system in place. In the interests of the safety of all road users drivers are asked to have regard for the one way system and to obey all turning restrictions and temporary signing. Advance notification boards are erected on site.
The works are progressing as planned and slightly ahead of programme. The remaining carriageway resurfacing and road marking works on the seaward side of Alexandra Road will be completed next week and it is anticipated that traffic will then be switched to the landward side on Thursday, October 27.
All of the businesses on Alexandra Road, the Promenade and Grant Street area will remain open as usual, with access available as set out above.
The work on Kingsway is currently still programmed to start early in the New Year. Further details on traffic flows and bus routes will be issued closer to the time.
Balfour Beatty WorkPlace would like to apologise for any disruption caused by these essential maintenance works and assure road users, residents and businesses that every effort will be made to make sure the works are carried out as efficiently as possible.
