Come down to the Renaissance Shop in Victoria Street this week to find out more about how reducing your carbon emissions can save you money and help the environment.

This week residents of North East Lincolnshire are being invited to attend the Renaissance Shop in Victoria Street, Grimsby, until September 11 to find out about the 10:10 campaign, which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 10 per cent by the end of 2010.
Residents who attend will be able to enter free prize draws to win a stagecoach bus pass or one of ten different environmentally friendly prizes for your homes or garden.

The first 20 people to be given advice each day will also receive a wind-up torch.

A range of information is available on how to reduce energy bills, cut down on food waste, provide advice on available grants, and how becoming more environmentally friendly can save you money.

Sallyanne Lindsey, environmental management officer for sustainable development, said: “The Energy Saving Trust are here with a driving simulator to give people tips on saving fuel.

“Everyone knows that cars are bad for the environment. They use up finite resources, contribute to climate change and reduce air quality, which affects peoples’ health. If residents have to use a car, rather than walk, cycle, or use public transport, they may like to have a go on the simulator to find out how they could alter they driving style to be more environmentally friendly.”

Other fun activities at the event include the chance to have a go on a bicycle-powered smoothie maker and the opportunity to meet players from Grimsby Town Football Club.

During this week, homeowners in the Daubney Street and Barcroft Street areas will also be visited by council officers, the Energy Saving Trust and Humberside Fire and Rescue. Residents will be able to talk to the teams about fire safety and security, energy saving, grants, entitlements and other ways to save money.

Councillor Peter Burgess, portfolio holder for the environment and green agenda, said: “By going to this event and learning about the 10:10 campaign, people can make small changes in their lives that will not only allow them to contribute to the campaign but could also make a real difference to their pockets.

“Whether it is by improving insulation in their homes; becoming aware of which appliances waste more power; or learning about grants that they may be eligible for; everyone can take away something of interest and contribute to the campaign.”
