Glitz and glamour of 1920s fashion comes to the Heritage Centre
Post-war style goes on show
A FASCINATING insight into 1920s fashion can be seen for free at the Fishing Heritage Centre from Friday, July 25 to Sunday, August 31.
In Vogue: The Glitz and Glamour of the 1920s presents a striking costume collection featuring party clothes and accessories and is set to take visitors back to one of the century’s most exciting decades.
This decade’s unique dress-style was characterised with straight, simple shapes yet extravagantly decorated with embroidery, beads and sequins.
It came after the restricted period during the First World War where many women worked outside the home and wore uniforms, with fashions becoming more severe and masculine.
The 1920s reflected the spirit of the post-war era when society relaxed and attitudes changed.
The Welholme Community Museum Group has been instrumental in preserving and managing the vintage clothing and has worked hard to install, design, restore and present the exhibition.
Councillor Steve Hocknell, portfolio holder for culture, leisure and healthier communities, said: “The inspiration for this exhibition came from a number of beautifully beaded dresses that we hold in our collection. The museum’s documentation assistants and the Welholme Museum Group were able to build the exhibition from there.
“It makes for an exciting and refreshing show bringing to life the flapper image that young women around the globe aspired to in the 1920s. It brought a change in attitudes and people’s outlook and this exhibition will give a real insight into the life and times of this era.”
All of the objects on display are from North East Lincolnshire Council’s museums collection.
In Vogue: The Glitz and Glamour of the 1920s is free to view in the museum’s Monkey Pig and Pie Gallery. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition over a coffee or light refreshments.
The exhibition will complement the 1920s musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, showing at the Grimsby Auditorium on August 15 and 16.
