Restored Ross Castle to be officially opened on June 5
Ceremony will be attended by the Mayor
An iconic Cleethorpes attraction is back on the tourist map and will be officially opened on Thursday, June 5.
Following a major revamp, the restoration of Ross Castle is now complete and ready to be opened next week in official ceremony to be attended by the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, local councillors and staff and students from schools in the area.
A number of local schools got involved in a competition to design a flag for the castle. The competition has closed and the winners are:
First place goes to Emilia Holm Bailey, aged nine of Signhills Junior School for her design 'The Crab'.
Runners up are Georgia Burnham, aged nine, of Signhills Junior School for her design, 'The Seagull' and Joseph Yull, also aged nine, of Thrunscoe Junior School for his design, 'The Sandcastle'. All three winners are to be presented with framed replicas of their designs by Colin Eastwell, the Mayor of North East Lincolnshire. Emilia's winning entry will be raised from the top of the castle at the event.
Robert Chalmers, resort manager for Cleethorpes, said: "Ross Castle is an icon of our coastline and it is great news that work is now complete and the monument is to open to the public.
"We received a number of fantastic entries to the design a flag competition and have chosen three deserving winners."
ES Rudkin, who were the main contractors for the restoration of the castle, are to award a £50 arts and crafts voucher to the winning entry and £25 vouchers will be given to the two runners up.
