Single Adult Discount

This is the most widely claimed discount, and can reduce your Council Tax charge by 25%.

If you are the only adult resident in the property, you can receive this discount.  The following people do not count towards the number of adults living in your home.  So you can get the 25% discount even if they live with you.

  • full time students, apprentices and Youth Trainees
  • patients resident in a hospital (long stay)
  • people who are severely mentally impaired
  • 18 and 19 year olds who are at school or have just left school (where child benefit is still in payment)
  • care workers working for low pay, usually for charities
  • people caring for someone with a disability who is not a spouse, partner or child under 18
  • members of visiting forces and certain international institutions
  • members of religious communities (monks and nuns)
  • people in prison (except those in prison for non-payment of council tax or a fine)
  • people who are subject to diplomatic privileges or immunities

If you think you may be entitled to this discount you should contact us immediately using the contact details on this page.

Please note: the information above is for guidance only, and certain conditions may apply in order to quality for a discount.
