You Could Make a Difference by Checking in on an Elderly Neighbour

By spending ten minutes visiting an elderly neighbour, you really could make a difference to their safety this winter.

Please download the check on your neighbours poster for a few simple checks that could keep your neighbour safe from fire.

For more information call Humberside Fire and Rescue Service on 0300 303 8242.

Nominated Neighbour

In an attempt to combat the incidence of Bogus Callers and other Doorstep Crime against vulnerable older adults in North East Lincolnshire, Local Neighbourhood Watch Groups in partnership with Humberside Police, and numerous other organisations across the area have launched a scheme called 'Nominated Neighbour.'

Under the scheme, elderly residents are encouraged to seek the help of a neighbour or relative in checking that unexpected callers to their door are genuine.

When an unexpected caller appears at the door, the resident shows a bright yellow Nominated Neighbour Card through a nearby window, or having secured the door chain; they open the door and show the card to the caller without engaging them in conversation. The card directs the caller to go to the house of a nearby 'Nominated Neighbour' who is better able to verify the caller's validity or to telephone a trusted relation or friend so that they can check the caller by telephone. When the Nominated Neighbour is satisfied that the caller is genuine, they accompany the caller to the older adult's home or they telephone them to give them further guidance.

For further information please read the bogus callers poster from the document downloads list.

Doorstep Crime

Many instances of Doorstep Crime involve rogue traders calling at residential properties offering to carry out roofing, building or other maintenance work. Householders in the area wishing to find legitimate and reliable businesses to carry out such work, are recommended to refer to the Home Services Directory. This is a list of locally-based vetted traders covering a wide range of interior and exterior trades and specialist services. The list is maintained by North East Lincolnshire Council Trading Standards and all members are thoroughly checked by Trading Standards and the Police, and by a process of customer satisfaction feedback in order to ensure that consumers are protected. The Home Services Directory is available for you to browse on-line.

In all cases, residents are advised to seek written quotations from traders prior to agreeing to any such work. Where contracts are signed in the home, consumers are also advised of their rights under the The Cancellation of Contracts made in a Consumer’s Home or Place of Work etc. Regulations 2008, to cancel any such agreement within 7 days of signing. This should normally be communicated in writing to the trader; contracts should include a full explanation of these rights and feature a cancellation slip for use by the consumer. Additionally, consumers should be aware that if they sign a declaration to allow the trader to start work immediately, they may be liable to any costs incurred even if they then cancel within the first 7 days. If you would like further advice regarding this (and any other consumer issue), you can call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or visit the Consumer Direct website.
