Bulky Waste Collection Service – The authority can collect bulky items from householders. Please note this is NOT a House or Garden Clearance service. We want to help you dispose of bulky items and excess household waste which may be unsuitable for collection as part of your normal weekly refuse collection service.
A
Aerosols – can be recycled with cans in the orange recycling box and the bring sites
- Small domestic aerosol cans that can be recycled include deodorant, hairspray, fly spray, polish, air fresheners and hair mousse cans etc.
- Aerosols that have previously contained propane or butane gas, paints, oils etc WILL NOT be accepted
- Please ensure that all aerosol cans are EMPTY prior to placing in your recycling container. Any aerosols found to contain some form of product will be rejected
Asbestos – can be taken by householders to Grimsby CRC site, disposal must be prebooked via the Waste Hotline.
Ash - a small amount of coal ash from open fires is very good for your compost heap – but not while it’s hot! For help and advice visit Recycle Now.

B
Bathroom suites can be taken to both CRC sites, and can be transported in a trailer if necessary, but cannot include tiles or plasterboard.
Batteries (Car) can be taken to Grimsby CRC site
Batteries (Household) can be returned to retailers, or taken to libraries, leisure centres and Council customer service points to recycle
Batteries (large, lithium) can be taken to batteries collection points at both CRC sites
Books can be taken to both CRC sites to some recycling bank sites or good quality books can be donated to local charities and libraries
Bottles (Glass) can go in the Green recycling box, most recycling bank sites, and both CRC sites.
Bottles (Plastic) only types 1, 2 and 3 can go in most recycling bank sites and both CRC sites,
Building Waste - bricks and building material cannot be included in household or garden waste bins as it can damage our collection vehicles. Limited building waste can be taken to the CRC sites.
BT Phone Book can be recycled in the Blue Box, or you can opt out by calling BT on 0800 833 400. All three directories can be cancelled in one go at junkbusters

C
Cans can be recycled in the Orange recycling box, at most recycling bank sites and both CRC sites,
Car Batteries can be taken to Grimsby CRC site
Cardboard - clean card, not detergent containers, can be taken to both CRC sites for recycling. Tetra pak (juice cartons) cannot currently be recycled in our area.
Carpet can be taken to the CRC sites or collect through the bulky waste collection service
Carrier Bags - try to reduce your consumption of disposable plastic bags.
- Consider purchasing heavy duty plastic bags or, even better, natural fibre ones made from materials such as cotton and jute instead, which can be used over and over again.
- Try to re-use disposable plastic bags by taking them with you next time you go shopping. Some supermarkets even offer reward points for doing this and many have introduced recycling banks at the entrance to the store for carrier bag recycling
CDs +DVD discs These can be reused to make attractive decorations, coasters, or even clocks! You can also send them to the address provided on www.recyclingcds.com
Chemicals (Household) i.e. fertilisers, wood preservatives and pesticides can be taken to Grimsby CRC site
Christmas Cards can be recycled in the Blue box. Some retailers offer Christmas card collections. To reduce the waste impact of your Christmas cards, re-use them as gift tags or send some electronic 'e-cards' instead
Christmas Trees can be left with the New Year’s garden waste collection. Why not grow your own if you have space, and re-plant it?

Clothes can be taken to textile banks some recycling sites or both CRC sites. Clean rags can also be donated at St Andrews Hospice shops, who send them for recycling.
Coins can be donated to many charities such as Oxfam
Composting up to a third of domestic waste thrown away is organic matter suitable for home composting. Grass, fruit, vegetable peel, teabags, eggshells, paper, cardboard and many more items can all be diverted from household waste bins, and transformed into compost. You can buy a subsidised home composter .
Computers & Monitors Some charities can accept them for re-sale such as Community Chest or they can be taken to both CRC sites
Cooking Oil Less than two litres of cooking oil can be left for collection in your household waste bin. It must be either in a sealed container or solidified. Alternatively you could use it to make seed cakes to feed the birds. If it is more than two litres then the cooking oil should be taken to our Grimsby CRC site. It is unlawful to dispose of oils of any description down a drain.

Fertilisers (Household Chemicals) can be taken to Grimsby CRC site
Fire Extinguishers are not accepted at the CRC sites
- Nitre Fire Services willing to accept them for a small disposal fee. They canbe contacted on 07754 650327
Fluorescent tubes can be taken to Grimsby CRC site.
- These contain mercury and must not be disposed of in general household waste. Special containers are provided for fluorescent tubes and low energy light bulbs at the CRCs.
Foil has no separate collection and should be placed in the green refuse bin.

You can also make compost at home, using raw fruit and vegetable waste
Food Cans can be recycled in the Orange Box or at most recycling bank sites and both CRC sites
Fridges & Freezers Some charities can accept them for re-sale such as Community Chest, or they can be taken to both CRC sites. The Authority also offers a bulky waste collection.

Garden Waste (not soil), small cuttings, leaves, bark, weeds, fallen fruit, twigs & small branches and grass can go in household garden waste bins, larger items can be taken to both CRC sites.
Gas Bottles (Liquid Petroleum) can be returned empty to suppliers for re-use, or taken to Grimsby CRC site.
Glass bottles can go in the Green recycling box, most recycling bank sites and both CRC sites.
Glass (window / plate) do not put in the recycling box.
- Both Pyrex and window glass melt at a higher temperature and so contaminate the recycling process. Instead they can be placed in the green refuse bin or taken to both CRC sites
Glasses many opticians collect old glasses, which can be re-used to help in Third World countries or send old pairs of glasses to Vision Aid Overseas
Grass cuttings can be placed in the brown garden waste bin

House Fittings - many local charities accept these to help those in need.

Ink Cartridges Try to use refillable ink cartridges, top it up, and off you go again. Cartridges can be recycled by:
- Donating them at your nearest Tesco store
- Requesting freepost envelopes by sending an email to freepost@redcross.org.uk or visiting the British Red Cross website.

Mattresses can be collected by many mattress suppliers when they deliver a new one, collected through the bulky waste collection scheme or taken to both CRC sites.
Medicines should be returned to your doctor or pharmacy
Metal (Scrap) can be taken to both CRC sites
Mirrors can be placed in the green refuse bin or taken to both CRC sites
Mobile Phones - shops which sell mobile phones will take them by back or you could donate to a charity who can earn money by recycling them
Monitors (Computer) small electrical equipment is accepted for re-sale by some charities such as Community Chest or they can be taken to both CRC sites

Nappies - modern washable nappies are a much better alternative to disposables. You can even claim some of your set-up costs back from the Council. Disposable nappies should be placed in the green refuse bin, excess household waste can be taken to both CRC sites

Packaging try to avoid when possible and remember your own shopping bags. To report overpackaging of a product, please get in contact with Trading Standards on 01472 325770.
Paint can be accepted at both Community Recycling Centre (CRC) sites, or put in the residual dustbin as long as it is kept in the general waste stream. Householders opting to use their residual dustbin to dispose of partly used or empty paint tins, are advised to first add small quantities of sand or soil to each tin (as an absorbent), and refit the lid.
Paper can go in your Blue recycling box, in addition to most recycling sites and both CRC sites .

Pyrex has no separate recycling method and should be put in your green refuse bin. Do not put in the recycling box as Pyrex melts at a higher temperature and so would contaminate the recycling process.
