Reducing food waste is an important part of North East Lincolnshire Council’s work. Each year UK homes throw away 8.3 million tonnes of food - imagine 10 Wembley stadiums filled to the brim with food- that’s how much food is bought but never enjoyed. And it’s not just peelings or bones, most of this is good food like bread, meat, cheese and vegetables that we simply have not got round to eating.
In fact we waste £12 billion worth of food that could have been eaten every year, costing the average UK family around £600 per year. This food waste isn’t just a financial problem – it’s an environmental one too. All the energy and resources used to supply food to us mean that when food gets wasted, it contributes to climate change. If we stopped wasting all this food, we could have the same huge environmental impact as taking 1 in every 4 cars off UK roads.
