Information on how we maintain the roads in winter weather, gritting routes, policy documents, what you can do to make sure you travel safely and to help others in your community.

As snow and ice thaws, damage will inevitably occur to road surfaces. Please report any pot holes and road defects to the council's contact centre (01472) 324500.

Overview

The Council, as highway authority, has responsibility for maintenance of highways, excluding Motorways and Trunk Roads, in the North East Lincolnshire area. The Highway Winter Service is a function that Balfour Beatty provides on behalf of the council during the winter months as part of its duty to maintain the highway, as far as is reasonably practicable, in a safe condition.

During the winter months (October – April), minimising delays due to bad weather and reducing the risk of accidents has significant social and economic benefits and is important to all users of the highway network, especially during periods of snow and ice. The winter service aims to:

  • Prevent ice from forming on the highway network
  • Disperse ice and snow already formed
  • Remove snow from the network

The winter service runs from 1st October to the 30th April each year with three distinct service periods that reflect the likely severity of weather events:

  • High Risk period - December, January & February; when severe weather might reasonably be expected
  • Low Risk period - November & March; when severe conditions may occasionally arise
  • Marginal Risk period – October & April; when severe conditions are generally not expected but may arise

During these periods, the service maintains staff, vehicles and other equipment and materials in readiness to deal with severe weather events at short notice and for extended periods of time if necessary.

The links on this page will take you to a guide that sets out what we do, how we do it and what you can expect from the service. It also links to useful information on driving safely in winter weather and provides advice on how you can help your local community by clearing snow and ice near you home. There is also a link to the detailed policy and operational plans of the authority that set out how it delivers on its duties as well as a map of the main routes treated.
