North East Lincolnshire Council has been advanced from wave 6 to wave 5 in the Government's Building Schools for the Future programme, securing nearly £120 million to transform secondary education in the borough.
The council has an ambitious and innovative strategy for change entitled 'Raising the Secondary Standard' which is focused on transforming teaching and learning and delivering a step change in school performance and school improvement. The strategy forms an integral part of the council's approach to rejuvenate and renew local communities and break the cycle of deprivation through community access at local schools. Both parts one and two of this document have been submitted to the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DSCF) and the council is currently working on it's Outline Business Case.
Building Schools for the Future is the biggest capital investment in school buildings for over 50 years. It will bring significant educational reform through a massive investment in buildings and ICT. The programme will transform teaching and learning and will be a major contribution towards improving the life chances of children, young people and their families.
This work coincides with a review of council leisure facilities. Through close working with colleagues in leisure services we will ensure a joined up approach to providing facilities that meet the needs of young people and also support the concept of schools being at the heart of local communities.
North East Lincolnshire Council began to renew their vision for education in early 2007 with an aim of fully joining the programme in 2008. Alongside the three academies which were advanced to open a year early in September 2007, the programme offers a once in a lifetime opportunity to reform and redesign the pattern of secondary education provision in the borough.
