Road and Pothole Repairs
The Council, as the Highway Authority, is responsible for the maintenance of approximately 550 km of adopted road within North East Lincolnshire. The maintenance of roads includes making safe any potentially dangerous defect such as potholes or road edge damage.
Potholes are defined as a defect in the highway surface, which is surrounded by surfacing material on all sides. Road edge damage generally occurs on unkerbed rural roads and is generally caused by vehicles overrunning the grass verge. Potholes or other road defects which exceed 2 inches or 50mm are considered to require repair.
Defects can develop over short periods of time and depending on size, depth and location will be a greater or lesser risk to the general public. The Council follows National Guidance with respect to the classification of defects and the time scale for any repairs to be carried out. The response of the Council will be dependent on the severity and location of the reported defect .
Any potentially dangerous defects within the adopted highway are normally made safe or repaired within 24 hours. If the defect is not considered dangerous the repair will be included in a future programme of works. Programmed road repairs are usually completed within six weeks.
