Freight Services
The area has an excellent rail infrastructure with a number of dedicated freight-only railway lines. These lines connect the Ports of Grimsby & Immingham, and the specialist freight terminals located close to, and at the ports, with the main rail network. This is the UK's busiest rail freight area.
English Welsh and Scottish Railway (EWS) is the largest freight operator in the UK, and is the main operator of railfreight services to/from the North East Lincolnshire area. EWS provides flexible logistical options:
The combination of specialist terminals and flexible rail services, facilitates the transportation of a range of cargoes, including steel, coal, petroleum, ores and forest products.
Grants may be available to offset the capital costs of providing rail freight handling facilities, to help companies re-invest in existing rail freight facilities, and to help operators meet the charges paid for access to the rail network.
Passenger Services
North East Lincolnshire also has regular and frequent direct passenger train services to Northern and Midland destinations. These services connect with other operators services enabling most major cities in the UK to be reached from Grimsby and Cleethorpes, by direct or single change passenger services.
