What is an abnormal load ?

The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use Regulations) provide basic law by which normal vehicles and trailers (upto a maximum of 40 tonnes) are built and operate on the road.

The movement of large or heavy loads and cranes that exceed dimensions set down in the C&U Regulations is permitted provided they comply with The Motor Vehicles (Authorisation of special Types) General Orders. These are generally referred to as Abnormal loads.

Where and when can they be moved ?

An abnormal load  can potentially go on any road provided the haulier complies with the law including weight limits.  Some roads are more suitable and more extensively used e.g A Class roads.  Before a haulier can move an abnormal load he must notify the Police.  In addition, if the gross weight or axle weights exceed those specified on the C&U regulations he must Indemnify the Highways Authority and all bridge owners along the proposed route. (e.g. Network Rail).

 

Requirments of Hauliers of Abnormal Loads

Loads over 44T Haulier must inform Police and Highway Authorities giving two days notice
Loads over 80T Haulier must inform Police and Highway Authorities giving five days notice.
Loads less than 40T but abnormal in size Police must be informed
High loads over 5m Haulier must survey route and inform YEDL and British Telecom as necessary.

Any width over 2.9m

Police to be informed

Any width over 4m

Police escort required
Loads over 6.1m wide, 27.4m long or 150T Require special order showing agreed route, issued by Highways Agency.
Loads over 5m wide but less than 6.1m wide Require VR authorisation issued by Highways Agency (they do not lay down a mandatory route)


 

When and how to notify

The law requires the haulier to give a minimum of two clear days notice to the Police, Highways Authority and Bridge owners before moving the load.
