Walk to School Week

Twice a year, in May and October, thousands of school children in North East Lincolnshire can take part in the national Walk to School Week campaigns. These events aim to promote healthier lifestyles and sustainable travel by encouraging children and young people to walk to school.
The council offers free walk to school week resources (stickers, bookmarks, wall charts, posters etc.) to all schools for each campaign. Almost all infant, junior and primary schools regularly take part involving up to 13,000 pupils.
There are many benefits associated with walking:
- Health - a form of exercise that can help improve fitness and reduce obesity levels
- Environment - less congestion and pollution
- Safety - less cars and traffic on the roads around schools
- Social - meeting and talking to friends on the way to school
- Neighbourhood - a chance to be aware of what is going on and experiencing new sights and sounds
- Life Skills - gaining road safety and personal awareness skills providing a basis for greater independence
