What is Dial A Ride?

Dial A Ride provides accessible transport for people who find it difficult to use public transport due to illness or disability.

How does it work?

Passengers ring the office preferably 3 to 4 days before they want to travel and book their ride. Our booking clerk will work out the route to be as efficient as possible, collecting people in the same area with similar travel requests. The service is door to door for the passengers and a companion.

What are the booking times?

All bookings are taken between 9:00a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday. The office is closed at weekends but the buses run 7 days a week subject to driver availability.

What sort of journeys can Dial A Ride be used for?

Anything - visit friends, relatives, the theatre, social clubs, pubs, shopping, work, voluntary work, college, the hospital, doctor - anything that you have been prevented from doing by a lack of accessible transport.

Who drives for Dial A Ride?

Drivers are all volunteers and will have taken part in training and have had their driving assessed.

What is your vehicle like?

The Dial A Ride vehicles are all modified to carry wheelchairs.

Is there a charge?

There is a £5 registration fee, yearly from the 1st April, to help with postage and photocopying costs. The costs of the journeys works out at approximately half the price of a taxi.

Who can become a passenger of Dial A Ride?

Anyone who cannot use public transport due to an illness or has a physical/sensory impairment, for example anyone who would be eligible for an "orange badge" or anyone who is receiving a Community Care package of care from the Social Services.
