| Introduction
Welcome to North East Lincolnshire's Traffic Accident Reduction and Road Safety Unit's website. As part of North East Lincolnshire's commitment to new road accident reduction targets set by the Government, this web site has been made available to increase individual road users awareness of the dangers associated with roads, and to provide accident reduction and road safety advice for all road users.
Background
Every year around 3,500 people are killed on Britain's roads and 40,000 are seriously injured. In total, there are over 300,000 road casualties, in nearly 240,000 accidents, and about fifteen times that number of non-injury incidents. This causes considerable grief and suffering for the individuals and families involved, a large proportion of which could be avoided if all road users applied more caution.

2010 Targets
Reduction targets for fatal and serious injury accidents set by the Department of the Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) in 1987 have been met, but in a further effort to reduce the grief and suffering caused by road accidents, more additional targets have now been set, which must be met by 2010.
North East Lincolnshire's Traffic Accident Reduction and Road Safety Unit are committed to achieving these targets, which require:
- a 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents
- a 50% reduction in the number of children killed or seriously injured
- a 10% reduction in the slight casualty rate, expressed as a number of people slightly injured per 100 million kilometres
The new targets will be challenging as reductions in the last period (1987 - 2000) were undoubtedly helped by marked changes in attitudes to drink-driving and legislation on seat belts.
Working in Partnership
North East Lincolnshire's Traffic Accident Reduction and Road Safety Unit cannot achieve such a major improvement in road safety on it's own, and recognise that working in partnership will be essential. The main partners include :
- Humberside Police
- voluntary groups and road user associations
- motor manufacturers
- Individual Road Users - drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians.
