Traditional Road Signs / Finger Posts

The Council, as the Highway Authority, is responsible for the maintenance of traditional finger post signs within North East Lincolnshire. Traditional finger post signs have been part of the English country scene for many years and are important to the identity of the rural area
For generations, travellers have relied on distinctive finger post signs to guide them along lanes and country roads. The signs are generally a concrete post fitted with wooden arms pointing travellers in the right direction, and many were painted distinctively in black and white. Sadly, many of the old signs are today in a sorry state of repair, and others have gone missing over the years. To ensure the signs' continued usefulness in our busy world, restoration work on the signs is taking place in the rural areas of North East Lincolnshire. Broken or missing wooden arms are being replaced and posts painted in their original livery. To enable this work to be carried out, the Council has secured grant funding from the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service and work is now being carried out as a joint collaboration between North East Lincolnshire Council and Lincolnshire County Council.
