£1m Boost for Central Cleethorpes Regeneration Programme

An ambitious programme to help regenerate Cleethorpes town centre has received a £1million boost through the Government’s Local Growth Fund as part of their commitment to the Northern Powerhouse.

The funding, which was secured by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership through the Humber’s Growth Deals with Government, will complement the multi-faceted Cleethorpes regeneration programme which is supported by the Coastal Communities Fund, secured by CoastNEL, and National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The project focuses on a strategic site at the heart of Cleethorpes and involves highway/road safety improvements, extension and enhancement of the public space along the full length of Sea Road, improvements to Pier Gardens including a new contemporary multi-use pavilion housing enhanced public facilities and a small events space.  The works will help the development of high quality retail/leisure/restaurant uses in the future.

The project will complement and add value to the ongoing Cleethorpes Regeneration Programme. The Programme aims to develop and diversify the economic role of the resort; attract new visitors and extend their dwell time; and support the attraction of new investment and the creation of new jobs by enhancing developer confidence in the area. The overall programme includes significant investment in public spaces on Alexandra Road, High Street and Sea View Street; the repair and restoration of key historic buildings; lighting, public art and support for an extended programme of events and festivals.

Lord Haskins, Chair of the Humber LEP, said: “Cleethorpes has the potential to attract many more tourists and be a key part of the visitor economy in the Humber.

“We believe these important infrastructure improvements will enable the regeneration of the area and will help grow tourism will not only enable job creation but aid the growth of businesses within the town.

“This would not be possible without initial investment to open the site and make it suitable for development and I am delighted that the Humber’s Local Growth Fund allocation, which we have secured from Government, is able to support regeneration in this part of North East Lincolnshire.”

Cllr John Fenty, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “There are a number of projects going on in the resort, with improvements to how the place looks and works key to drawing visitors into the area and making it a place that people want to live and work in as well. We’ll be holding information days and have the plans on show through the summer in the resort so people can let us have their views. The plans for the area have been in the pipeline for a while and it’s thanks to external funding that we’ve been able to bring these plans forward in the last few years.”

Northern Powerhouse and Coastal Communities Minister, Jake Berry MP, said: “We’re committed to boosting economic growth across the Northern Powerhouse and the whole of the UK as we build a Britain fit for the future.

“Our £1 million investment from the Local Growth Fund will build on support from our Coastal Communities Fund, helping to transform Cleethorpes town centre by improving the iconic Pier Gardens and other public spaces for tourists and local residents alike. This regeneration will also lay the groundwork for the repair and restoration of key historic buildings and an exciting programme of events and festivals that will breathe new life into Cleethorpes town centre.”
