Two year old funding

When can you get two year old funding?

The term after your child turns two means they could be entitled to 15 hours a week of free early education until they reach school age.

Do you qualify for two year old funding?

You could get 15 hours free childcare for your 2 year old if:

  • You are on a low income, or no earned income and receive certain benefits
  • Your child has specialist needs and is in receipt of Disability Living Allowance
  • A child you provide care for is looked after by the Local Authority

If you answer ‘YES’ to any of the above statements, or if you are not sure, please call 01472 326292 (option 1)

To find out if you can get help with childcare costs online you can go to the Childcare Choices website.

What childcare help can you get?

If your child is eligible for two year old funding they can access up to 15 hours per week for 38 weeks per year. The childcare can be taken over a minimum of two days and no session can be longer than ten hours a day or shorter than two and a half hours a day.

No sessions are to be before 7 am or after 7 pm, funding can be split between a maximum of two providers and a child is eligible to start the term after their second birthday until the term after their third birthday when they will be starting to access their three year old place within a nursery or childcare setting.

How does it work?

  • A child born on or between 1st April and 31st August can apply for two year old funding from 1st April and access a place from 1st September.
  • A child born on or between 1st September and 31st December can apply for two year old funding from 1st September and access a place from 1st January.
  • A child born on or between 1st January and 31st March can apply for two year old funding from 1st January and access a place from 1st April.

If you have been notified of your entitlement to two year old funding or you wish to source a place for you three or four year old. You can choose an Ofsted registered through our List of Early Years Providers for 2 Year Olds (docx).

Your entitlement to free childcare does not guarantee you a place with your chosen childcare provider. A provider may choose not to offer the full 38 weeks of funding. It is also up to them what 2, 3, 4 year old funding they do offer. You need to check with the provider what spaces are available.
