North East Lincolnshire Council

Help with debt

If you are having difficulties paying your council tax please contact us.  This gives us a chance to work together to clear the debt

Debt management team

Our debt management team are here to help if you have problems paying bills for council tax, business rates, or any other debts that you owe us (for example, housing benefit overpayments that you have to repay).

If you are having difficulties paying, please contact us as soon as possible. This gives us a chance to work together to clear the debt.

We understand the difficulties that you may have in paying your debts and will work closely with other departments and agencies outside of the council, to give you support.

Help us to help you!

When we write to you about your debt, please don’t ignore the letters; contact us so that we can discuss your outstanding debt and help you make arrangements to pay a manageable amount.

Avoid the unpleasant consequences of ignoring debt, such as enforcement agents, county court judgments and bankruptcy. It is in your hands. Work together with us to deal with the situation.

Organisations offering advice

Dealing with all the problems debt creates can be difficult, but there are organisations who can give you help and advice.

They can give you advice if you are worried about any of the following:

  • your debts are mounting up
  • you think your home is at risk
  • you are worried about legal action being taken against you
  • your creditors will not accept the payments you are offering
  • you do not feel confident in sorting out your finances
  • you have any questions about your finances

For the contact details of these and other support organisations download our directory of support services from the related documents section of this page.
