Pick up tips on reducing your waste and recycling more this Recycle Week

This is the year the people of North East Lincolnshire are taking recycling into their own hands. In the biggest and best Recycle Week ever, Recycle Now is tasking residents to take recycling into their own hands and take action to protect our environment.

And we’ll be hitting the road to share hints and tips on how to recycle more and waste less.

Meet the team for the 17th Recycle Week (23 – 29 September) and find out how you can do your bit to help the environment between 10am and 2pm at the following locations:

  • Monday 23 September, by Subway in Kennedy Way, Immingham
  • Tuesday 24 September, Freeman Street Market, Grimsby
  • Wednesday 25 September, St Peter’s Avenue car park, Cleethorpes
  • Thursday 26 September, Top Town Market, Grimsby
  • Friday 27 September, St Peter’s Avenue car park, Cleethorpes

The team can answer questions about waste and recycling, give information and advice about what you can recycle and what goes in your green wheelie bin.

There will also be a recycling quiz and people who take part will have the chance to win a £50 high street voucher.

Ross Castle will also be lit up green for Recycle Week to highlight recycling.

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment, said: “More and more people in North East Lincolnshire are recycling which is fantastic. Everyone can play their part in helping to protect the environment.

“That’s why we’re encouraging people to recycle more and waste less this Recycle Week because we want everyone to benefit from a clean, well-cared for environment that local people can be proud of.”

Craig Stephens, campaign manager for Recycle Now, added: “This year, we’ve all taken more notice of our impact on the environment and realised that recycling is part of reducing that impact.

“Here in North East Lincolnshire, it’s no different. More and more of us are recycling, so the next step is to make sure we get our recycling right. So come on North East Lincolnshire, keep up the great work and let’s make the town’s recycling better than ever before.”

Recycle Now is capitalising on heightened awareness of the Sir David Attenborough effect and inspiration of Our Planet right here in North East Lincolnshire, tasking residents – and people all over the UK – to act and focus on getting recycling right during Recycle Week 2019.

Getting recycling right

Latest research from Recycle Now reveals that more than 60 per cent of UK households are now recycling more than they were a year ago because of environmental concerns.

Research shows that more and more UK households are recycling plastic drinks, cleaner, toiletry and shampoo bottles, among other items including glass and metal tin cans.

Nearly a third of these people say environmental concerns are the main reason for doing more and others attribute it to an increased awareness of what can be recycled.

While the research showed an increase in recycling, it also showed that UK households sometimes incorrectly put items like nappies, toys and toothpaste tubes in the recycling bin.

North East Lincolnshire is a town of recyclers – but there are some simple things that we can all do to make our recycling even better:

  • Recycle more of these items: Plastic bottles, plastic bottles from your bathroom and household aerosols.
  • Make sure these never go in the recycling bin: Food trays, yoghurt pots, paint cans or tin foil.
  • And if you’re at all unsure about how to recycle a specific item, you can go to nelincs.gov.uk/recycling

What and how we recycle really matters. Recycling an item rather than throwing it in the general rubbish bin means that it will be dealt with in the most environmentally friendly way, keeping materials in use and out of the environment.
