Submit a planning application

The easiest way to submit an application is online through the planning portal.  You can complete the application form, attach supporting documents and pay fees online, saving you the cost of printing and postage.

You may submit an application yourself or, depending on the nature of the application, choose a professional agent to submit it for you.

If you are submitting a householder application, a list of accredited agents who can submit your application for you, is available.   These applications will be fast tracked through the validation process and will be with the case officer within 24 hours of receipt.

Alternatively, you can download the forms and return them, along with the associated drawings and fee, by post or hand delivered to the address given in the contact details below.

Please note: if submitting in paper form, only one original application form and one copy of all other documents will be required.

Planning Aid England (PAE) provides free, independent and professional advice on town and country planning issues to community groups and individuals. They believe everyone should have the opportunity to get involved planning their local area, and provide people with the knowledge and tools to do this.

They offer a range of services including:

  • A free web resource called planning aid direct which provides answers to questions people often ask about planning; clear, simple explanations of how the planning system works; and signposting on where to go next
  • An advice service – professionally qualified planning advisors answer enquiries, for a maximum of 15 minutes, on planning related issues in England either via email or over the phone
  • Additional support for eligible individuals, communities and groups. This may cover training on the planning process, and specific advice and assistance on making representations on the local plan, responding to a planning application or appealing against a planning application decision
  • Neighbourhood planning advice and guidance as part of the supporting communities in neighbourhood planning initiative
  • They are looking to expand their services and offer mediation and wider community engagement support and assistance

They do have limited resources and try to focus on those who really need their help and cannot get assistance from elsewhere.

With this in mind:

  • They don’t provide pre-application advice about a specific site or planning application. They always refer enquirers to their local planning authority for pre-application advice
  • They don’t provide free advice to other professionals (e.g. architects, surveyors) or business owners, who may find it helpful to use the RTPI directory of planning consultants to find a professional planner in their area
