Bargate highways and bridges project

Cars driving across Bargate junction

Bargate Junction to become safer for motorists and pedestrians.

FAQs

  • Replacing the traffic lights at the Bargate/Dudley Street/Deansgate/Grosvenor Street junction, and at the nearby junction of Deansgate/Church Lane/Frederick Ward Way. The traffic lights are at the end of their serviceable life and require urgent replacement.
  • New push button controlled pedestrian crossings will be installed at three arms of the Bargate junction. The road will be widened to create the space needed to install an island for the staggered crossing. These measures will vastly improve safety for pedestrians at what is a very busy junction.
  • At the same time, essential works will also take place to the parapets on Deansgate Bridge. This bridge, like any other such structure, needs regular inspection and repair to ensure it remains safe and to preserve its well-known features for years to come. Carrying this work out at the same time will prevent possible future disruption.
  • The current traffic lights are at the end of their serviceable life and require urgent replacement. The traffic signals at this junction are 37 years old, significantly beyond the manufacturers recommended lifespan of 15 years and are having an increasing number of faults with them.  They are so old now that replacement parts are no longer available. There is a growing risk that as they fail, and if they do, they will not work again. These works have been planned for some time but have not been possible until related utility works were completed.
  • This busy junction does not currently have push button controlled pedestrian crossings. Installing push button pedestrian crossings on three arms of the Bargate junction will improve pedestrian safety and create a safe route across.
  • These essential works affect the Bargate/ Dudley Street / Deansgate / Cartergate / Grosvenor Street junction and the Deansgate/ Church Lane/Frederick Ward Way junction which is incredibly busy at peak times and therefore needs to be maintained in good and full working order.
  • We are aware that roadworks cause understandable frustration for motorists especially when they are in any town or city centre and coincide with other necessary and inevitable works.
  • With this in mind we have scheduled these important works during the summer holidays when school closures minimise the pressure on the network and disruption will be at a minimum.
  • There will only be a very few occasions when a full closure will be required during the course of these works and they will always take place overnight as and when necessary. This will mean motorists will have access in both directions on the main roads at all times, with temporary lights.
  • It will only be the short stretch of Grosvenor Street that will be closed for the duration of the works.

Overnight road closures

During the overnight road closures, the following streets will be closed for the works to take place:

North to South:

  • Augusta Street through Bargate junction to Cartergate and Deansgate
  • Closures up to Frederick Ward Way, Bethlehem Street, Wellowgate

East to West:

  • Littlefield Lane to Grosvenor Street

For specific details of the road closures, please email [email protected].

Yes, there will be signed diversions in place for pedestrians around the works.

The works are expected to take around 3.5 months to complete.

As the project is funded by the Local Transport Plan (LTP) budget, the money ringfenced for improving Bargate Junction needs to be spent before March 2025.The current traffic lights are at the end of their serviceable life and require urgent replacement. The traffic signals at this junction are 37 years old, significantly beyond the manufacturers recommended lifespan of 15 years and are having an increasing number of faults with them.  They are so old now that replacement parts are no longer available. There is a growing risk that as they fail, and if they do, they will not work again which would result in the requirement for four way temporary traffic signals until the works could be completed which would result in significant ongoing disruption. These works have been planned for some time but have not been possible until related utility works were completed.

It is fully appreciated that Corporation Road Bridge works and the A180 scheme will also remain in place during the summer and that this will cause some frustration.

We are asking people to appreciate the complexities that come with projects of this nature, especially when they involve old and historic structures (as with Corporation Bridge) and the repair and vital maintenance of bridges – as with the A180.

The A180 work centres on the three bridges coming into Grimsby – those being the Gilbey Road and Cleethorpe Road Flyovers and the Alexandra Dock Bridge.

The Council received £8m worth of funding from Department for Transport (DfT) to ensure these three structures could be repaired. There are time constraints on project delivery and the type of work carried out must be completed in mild weather months. For this to happen, the work must continue over the summer, as planned.

Corporation Road Bridge is a Grade II Listed structure of great historical importance. Its importance was recognised by the DfT (Department for Transport), which awarded a grant of £3million to carry out the essential repairs that are now happening. The current delays to the Corporation Road Bridge works could not have been foreseen until the work had started and sections of the structure were revealed as being in a very bad state of disrepair.

The project is being funded by the Local Transport Plan.

Yes, there will be access in both directions on the main roads at all times, with temporary lights.

Works of this nature will involve increased levels of noise, however every effort will be made to minimise any noise during night time hours.

Letters will be sent to residents with contact details to enable residents within the work area to discuss access arrangements directly with the delivery team.

Yes, however for the night time road closures diversions will be in place for vehicular traffic.

Yes, there will still be access to the Cartergate doctor’s surgery.

There is no on street parking permitted within the work area, so there should be no issue with dust or debris.
