Children and families

Every year we celebrate a very special group of individuals in our community.

The SEND Awards give a spotlight to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Having to overcome additional challenges makes the achievements of these individuals even more inspiring.

The event started in 2022 and has become a much-anticipated event in our area.

12 winners from a shortlist of over 400 nominations were chosen by our SEND Young People’s Advisory Group.

Ann-Marie Matson, Director of Children’s Services at North East Lincolnshire Council said, “We feel incredibly proud to be able to share the stories of these young people.

“There are many positive things going on at any one time in SEND in our borough, these are just a snapshot.

“The SEND Awards would not be possible without the hundreds of people who submit nominations each year. The people you recognise are truly touched.”

The young people, adults and organisations recognised show perseverance, kindness and enthusiasm. They are an incredible example to others.

Sports Award Winner Callum Jefferson has Quadriplegic (Dyskinetic) Cerebral Palsy. He can’t stand unaided and has limited use of both hands and his body movements.

He is in a harness and a special chair and needs a talker to communicate properly, however he can push a joystick with his right hand and that is how he plays Powerchair Football.

Callum’s journey is not just about participation—it is about progression, achievement, and pushing boundaries.

For some young people with additional needs attending school is not always easy.  Extra support might be needed in the form of additional resources, extra time to complete tasks, or ensuring there’s always someone there to help and offer advice when it’s needed.

Poppy Gaunt, the recipient of the Education & Learning Award, not only managed to overcome a range of hurdles, but also found the time to help and support her peers. She completed her work experience at Orchard Education and aspires to become a teaching assistant. This shows that with the right support learners can enjoy and thrive in education.

Although still only young, students in our area are using their experience to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Community Award winner Jax Batty is a dedicated and passionate fundraiser who has raised an incredible £40,000 for Stoma Awareness.

Kim Glasby won the Inspiring Teacher Award for guiding and mentoring students through 32 years at Welholme Academy. Her nomination read “Kim has such a kind, calm and caring demeanour enabling staff and parents and carers to approach her easily. With Kim serving the school community for over 30 years, she has helped and cared for generations of children and their families. She is an integral part of the school and school life. Kim’s influence extends beyond Welholme Academy.”

Other winners were recognised for entrepreneurial innovation and success, helping to close the disability employment gap through volunteer roles, and making local activities and services inclusive for all.

Congratulations to all winners and nominees.
