Next time you go to Nunsthorpe you will see a marked reduction in litter, all thanks to the selfless efforts of the community.

From residents to charity groups, everyone came together to make the area a cleaner, more friendly place to be by picking up bottles, cans and even a couple of for sale signs.

Starting at the newly refurbished Nunsthorpe Tavern, teams combed the surrounding area and nearby park. Working together as part of the Clean and Green initiative, they were joined by local environmental campaigner James Elliott, known as The Canoe River Cleaner.

Working in partnership with the Council, James is visiting local schools and communities carrying out educational sessions and litter picks to teach others the benefits of keeping our area clean.

The event was also helping to improve the area, a key aspect of the Clear, Hold, Build project that is aimed at creating a safer, more welcoming South Ward – which includes the Nunsthorpe.

By working together, organisations, charities and residents made a massive contribution to improving the area they live in – instilling pride in the Nunsthorpe.

“This waste was all on the estate and everyone did a great job. We put the call out and people just came and helped,” said James.

He added: “We all know what we should do with litter but not everyone does it. These litter picks are a great way to clean up an area and help people understand how important it is to put your rubbish in the bin.

“The borough is a much better place when it’s cleaner and working with the Street Cleansing team, me and the community can go that extra mile to help remove as much as possible.”

For the Council, it’s vitally important that this work is carried out and continues. Councillor Henry Hudson, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Net Zero, said: “This is an astounding effort by the community. Getting rid of this amount of rubbish is no easy task and everyone who took part should be proud of themselves.

“However, let this be a lesson to everyone else that they too have a duty to look after their community and keep it clean.”

Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, added: “This is a great way to improve the community and is exactly what Clear, Hold, Build is about. The Police are doing excellent work in reducing crime across the area and now it’s time to create a more appealing area for residents.

“Events like this show just how much love there is for the Nunsthorpe and I can’t wait to see what’s next.”
