“I feel famous”: Littlecoates students thrilled with art work in town

Children from a Grimsby school have been enjoying a recent visit to the town centre to get a glimpse at their wonderful artwork.

Over the past few months, the art club from Littlecoates Academy have been designing a range of signs to welcome visitors to Grimsby town centre. In conjunction with this, the gardening club have been working alongside Grimsby in Bloom, helping to grow plants that are now flourishing in planters along Victoria Street.

Part of the ongoing regeneration works to Grimsby town centre, the children have been helping make the area a safer and more welcoming place for everyone. For the students involved, it’s been great to be part of something that is helping their home town and its community.

Eva, Year 5, said: “I’ve really enjoyed the project. Learning about the history of Grimsby and then drawing all sorts of things to go on the signs has been great.”

She added: “Coming back to see them put on the planters has been really fun too, I feel famous now!”

With three different designs spread across Victoria Street, the children have art welcoming visitors from every entrance, something the staff are particularly proud about.

“It’s been great for them to see their drawings come to life and to see the results of their efforts; They’re really proud to be a part of it,” Said Emma Bradley, teacher at Littlecoates Academy.

She added: “For us as teachers, it’s great to see the pupils realise that they can make a difference to their community and be proud of where they live. That’s all we want for the children, for them to have those aspirations to make a positive change.

“We’re really proud of them.”

With the project having now come to an end, Emma reflected on what has been a great few months. She said: “Personally, I think it’s been great and the team at the Council have been so generous by helping the kids in any way they could, the response has just been brilliant.”

Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “I would just like to start by saying thank you to the staff and pupils of Littlecoates Academy.

“Their work has been invaluable in helping Grimsby town centre during what is arguably its most important period. The signs are so welcoming and the colour provided by the plants breathes new life into Victoria Street.”
