9 people had E-scooters seized and 8 arrests were made for various offences following multiple Days of Action in Grimsby town centre.

Officers from Humberside Police were supported by CCTV operatives over the three days across November and December to tackle the issue of illegal e-scooters on public highways. The initiative was a part of the ongoing Operation Mastery, a joint approach to tackling Anti-Social Behaviour in the town centre.

Defined as a motor vehicle, E-scooters are illegal to drive on cycle paths, roads, pavements or parks. Those who do own an E-scooter require a licence, insurance and an MOT to use on private land.

During the Days of Action, Humberside Police officers were accompanied by CCTV Operatives, resulting in several arrests and seizures.

Over the three-day period, the results were:

  • 9 E-Scooters seized to be crushed
  • 1 car seized under the Road Traffic Act
  • 4 arrests for shop theft
  • 1 arrest for drugs related offences
  • 2 arrests for assault of an emergency worker
  • 1 arrest for breach of bail

The CCTV system used to aid police was introduced in 2022 as part of a £2.25 million overhaul to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour across North East Lincolnshire.

This system, along with partnership working, has helped to reduce crime by 5% in Grimsby Town centre over the previous two years.

The control room works to capture events as they happen, but also stores footage to be used retrospectively by emergency services as evidence. Alternatively, the cameras can be used to monitor an ongoing situation should they be requested to by Humberside Police.

Ultimately, this partnership working is aiming to create a safer borough with a joined up approach that works effectively to tackling crime and Anti-Social Behaviour.

Speaking about the Days of Action, Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “This is a great result from three Days of Action in the town centre.

“People may think these are great presents but they can be very dangerous if not used appropriately. I urge parents to think again if they are contemplating buying one as a Christmas present for their children.

“These motor vehicles are not road legal and there are serious repercussions for those who do not abide by the law.”

Neighbourhood Policing Inspector, Claire Jacobs, added: “We remain committed to working closely with North East Lincolnshire Council to address the illegal use of e scooters in the town centre.

“Taking part in days of action like this allows us to quickly remove risks from our roads, including uninsured or illegally used vehicles.

“As we approach Christmas, if you’re considering buying an e scooter or bicycle, please make sure you understand the laws around their use before making a purchase. Your awareness helps keep our roads safer for everyone.”
