Special day makes time for us all to talk about mental health

North East Lincolnshire Council is encouraging residents, workplaces and community groups to take part in Time to Talk Day this Thursday 5 February 2026 – the nation’s biggest conversation about mental health.

Mental health problems affect one in four people, yet many still feel isolated, ashamed or unable to talk about how they feel. Time to Talk Day aims to change that by empowering people to start simple, everyday conversations that can make a real difference.

Talking about mental health doesn’t need to be daunting – a quick chat with a colleague, friend or family member can have a powerful impact. The day encourages everyone to make space for conversation, listen without judgement and remind people that support is available.

This year’s campaign includes a focus on the construction industry, where long hours, fast‑paced work and a “get on with it” culture can make it harder to speak openly about mental health. Small actions such as checking in on site, having a brew break, or asking “How are you, really?” can help workers feel supported.

Organisations like Mates in Mind provide resources and real stories to help break stigma and encourage open conversations across workplaces. These stories show how simple moments of connection can help people feel seen and supported.

North East Lincolnshire Council is urging employers across all sectors to champion Time to Talk Day and help create a culture where mental health is treated with the same importance as physical health.

Time to Talk Day encourages:

  • Checking in with colleagues on site
  • Normalising conversations during breaks or shift changes
  • Reminding workers that asking for help is not a weakness
  • Treating mental health with the same importance as physical safety .
