After 16 successful and much-loved years of trading, Carl’s Meats, a long-standing fixture of the Top Town Market community, closed last week and will be under new ownership from this Friday.

Carl has been an integral part of the market for over a decade and a half, building not only a thriving business, but also strong relationships with customers and fellow traders. Known for his quality produce, friendly service, and dedication to his customers, Carl’s presence will be greatly missed.

Carl has decided to take a well-earned break and is looking ahead to new and exciting ventures. However, he won’t be far away, his sister, who owns The Card and Party Box stall, will still see him popping by and lending a hand from time to time.

Customers will be pleased to know, taking over the business from Friday is a very familiar face to many of the market’s regulars. At just 28 years old, Oliver Batchelor, known to most as Olly, will be stepping into ownership after an incredible 13-year journey working alongside Carl.

Olly first approached Carl for a job at the age of 14 but was told he was too young and encouraged him to return the following year if he was still interested. True to his word, Olly came back at 15 and began with a Saturday job. From there, he progressed to an apprenticeship and went on to become a fully qualified butcher, earning his place as a respected member of the market team.

Speaking about this exciting transition, Olly said: “I’m very excited for this new chapter ahead and grateful for everything I’ve learned from Carl over the years. I’m looking forward to continuing to serve our loyal customers and hopefully welcoming many new faces as well.”

Under new ownership, the stall will be renamed Batchelor’s Family Butchers, and they will continue the tradition of quality and community that customers have come to expect.

Vikki Wilson, Property Services Manager says; “On behalf of all the Market Staff and Traders, we’d like to express our sincere gratitude to Carl for the years of dedicated service and wish you all the very best as you move forward. We’re incredibly proud of Olly and everything he has achieved over the years to reach this new chapter. Carl has handed over the business to excellent hands, and we’re excited to see things go onwards and upwards.”

The newly named stall will officially be open to the public on Friday 17 April.
