Creative professionals, facilitators and community leaders are being offered a unique opportunity to help make history for Grimsby on a national stage.

Following its selection as one of just 15 towns shortlisted from almost 400 applications for the UK’s first-ever Town of Culture 2028 competition, Grimsby is now seeking talented freelancers to help develop its final bid.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has awarded the town £60,000 to support the next stage of the process, with Grimsby’s full UK Town of Culture application due to be submitted by 30 November 2026.

Working alongside residents, businesses, community organisations and young people, successful applicants will help shape Grimsby’s cultural story and ensure local voices are at the heart of the bid.

Applications are now open for three key paid freelance roles running from September until November 2026:

  • Creative Lead – An experienced cultural producer who will help design an ambitious programme of events and activities that reflects Grimsby’s identity, heritage and future aspirations. The role will work with artists, organisations and communities to develop a compelling vision that could help secure national recognition for the town.
  • Community Lead Facilitator – Responsible for engaging communities across North East Lincolnshire, gathering ideas and feedback, and ensuring residents play a direct role in shaping the bid. The successful applicant will help establish a GY28 Citizens’ Panel and identify the themes and stories that matter most to local people.
  • Young People’s Lead Facilitator – Focused on working with children and young people to capture their ambitions for Grimsby’s future. The role will create opportunities for young people to contribute ideas and ensure their voices are reflected throughout the final submission.

Melanie Onn, MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes and Chair of the Town of Culture sub group, said:

“This is an opportunity for local people to play a direct role in shaping a bid that reflects who we are, where we’ve come from and where we want to go. I would really encourage creatives, facilitators and community leaders to consider applying and help showcase Grimsby on a national stage.”

Cllr Tanya Brasted, NELC Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and the Visitor Economy, added:

“These opportunities offer talented people the chance to play a leading role in shaping Grimsby’s future cultural story. We want local people to help us build a bid that truly belongs to Grimsby and supports our ambition to become the UK’s first Town of Culture.”

Applications are open now and close at 2pm on Tuesday 1 September. Applicants should send a CV and covering letter of no more than two A4 pages to createnortheastlincolnshire@nelincs.gov.uk.
