Every year in September, places across the country throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community and history.

It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore, so earmark the date in your diary!

The festival opens on Friday 11 through to Sunday 20 September with several Heritage Open Days events being held in North East Lincolnshire.

But ahead of that, on 28 August, 10am to 3pm at Freshney Place Shopping Centre, Grimsby, you can come and see us to pick up a North East Lincolnshire festival brochure, to find out about all the fantastic local events taking place during Heritage Open Days 2026.

If you can’t make it on the day, drop into Grimsby Minster (during their usual opening hours) throughout the festival for information on events. All the events are also online – visit www.DiscoverNorthEastLincolnshire.co.uk/hod to find them all.

The theme for 2026 is Everyday Histories, with organisers putting on events, exhibitions, talks and more about daily working life through the ages.

This year, there’s more than 20 events, including: self guided tours which have been designed by the Grimsby, Cleethorpes and District Civic Society; exhibitions about Cleethorpes’ fight with the sea and a photographic exhibition at the Fishing Heritage Centre; a scarecrow trail at the Fitties; a tour of the community garden being run by Green Futures, and lots of other great events and exhibitions.

Cllr Tanya Brasted, Cabinet member culture, heritage and the visitor economy, said: “We’ve had some excellent Heritage Open Days through the years, and some brilliant activities in North East Lincolnshire. This year’s events have a real focus on our local, every day history, and I can’t wait to visit some of these. The best of all – they’re all free to see!”

During the festival, you can also go see the Time Trap museum at Grimsby’s Town Hall for free on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September, and get 10% reduction off a ticket to Grimsby Fishing Heritage Museum on Saturday 19 September (excludes Ross Tiger tours).
