Fined! North East Lincolnshire Council took action when roadworks were erected on one of Cleethorpes’ busiest junctions – and then left, with the appropriate notice not submitted to allow work to actually start.
Cadent Gas was given a permit by the authority for temporary traffic lights to be put up at the Clee Crescent / Clee Road junction for upgrade work. They were installed on September 7 as agreed…but then nothing!
After receiving a complaint from a resident, Council Leader, Cllr Oliver Freeston, alerted officers to the issue – and found out that action was already in process.
Because the company had failed to submit a works start notice, a £240 Fixed Penalty Notice could be issued. There was also a demand that Cadent Gas started the works straight away or removed the lights – along with a warning that the permit was unlikely to be extended.
As a result, the upgrade started on September 10 – and is now taking place along Clee Crescent. The infrastructure work in that particular area, along with other sites along Clee Crescent and Carr Lane, are all expected to be completed by the end of October.
Cllr Freeston said: “Of course, we all appreciate that this must be done – ultimately such upgrades will benefit residents – and we understand that such work causes disruption.
“However, what people are sick and tired of is seeing a complete lack of action at such sites, with seemingly no consideration for the disruption being caused – especially at a time when the schools have re-opened, causing long delays at key junctions like this. This action taken by the council sends out a clear message as to what we are prepared to do if this kind of thing happens again.”
