“I am just so proud of the wonderful things we have going on in this town, not just now but in the past and all the exciting things to come. Here’s to celebrating what a brilliant town Grimsby really is.” The words of Town of Culture Ambassador number one: actor Tommy Turgoose.
“Grimsby has such a rich cultural heritage, and being the UK’s Town of Culture is all about securing those opportunities so that the next generation can contribute to that cultural heritage in years to come. Who knows, we might find the next Rod Temperton, Patricia Hodge, or even Thomas Turgoose, imagine!” The words of Town of Culture Ambassador number two: actor, comedian and singer Lloyd Griffiths.
As Grimsby’s GY28 campaign gathers pace, we’re delighted that both Tommy and Lloyd have sent us videos pledging their support to help our town to become the very first UK Town of Culture in 2028.
In video clips that you can see on GY28 | NELC both our home-grown stars talk about ‘their town’ and how they want to do all they can to back the bid and spread the word far and wide.
Our first two ambassadors are going to be joined by scores more between now and November as we whip up support and prepare to submit our final GY28 bid to Government.
Schools, businesses, charities and residents are using the GY brand, adopting the very special ‘Grimsby’ alphabet letters and waving our placards. Docks Beers may have its own GY28 pint, young people will be reading ‘Ambition’ – the special OnSide Horizon poem, and there’ll be songs from young people.
Meanwhile, our team of creatives are visiting Grimsby Town’s Saturday home match to talk to supporters, there’s other sessions set up and there’s a bumper ‘Grimsby: A Place We Call Home’ launch event at Grimsby Minster on Friday – 9th October. Everyone’s welcome and there’s loads going on!
For more on all of those see our events section on GY28 | NELC
There’s also the GY28 survey on GY28 | NELC and we want as many people to complete it as possible – the more the better as the bid is compiled.
As everyone should know by now, Grimsby has reached the final 15 towns bidding to be crowned Town of Culture 2028. We sit in the large town category alongside three others. Announced in March 2027, the overall winning town will receive £3-million to deliver a transformative six months of culture, to showcase the talent, pride and potential of its community.
