General

Move Together is North East Lincolnshire’s drive to see people enjoying getting out and about. Along with partners, the council is promoting organisations and groups that encourage residents to take up ‘moving more’! Here’s what’s happening at your local Lincs Inspire venues this October. If you organise or help to run groups/clubs or organisations in the borough that help to get people moving and want to tell people, then please email [email protected] and mark the email Move Together – we’ll be in touch!

Take your first step to better wellbeing: Whether you’re managing a health condition, recovering from illness, or just feeling a little disconnected, Lincs Inspire, offers friendly, supported ways to feel better in body and mind. This October, two free events, see below for full details, are a chance to find out what’s available.

Active Forever is a 12-week referral programme for people living with long-term health conditions, disabilities, or recovering from illness. Friendly, specialist staff help you choose two activities a week to suit your abilities, whether you’re managing symptoms, preparing for surgery or recovering from it. Options include power-assisted and adapted equipment at Grimsby Health & Wellbeing Centre, gentle wellbeing classes at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, gyms, pools, exercise classes, healthy weight management courses, community activities like Tai Chi and low impact Zumba, and Reading Well through Lincs Inspire Libraries.

Cardiac Rehabilitation (phase 4) is a 16-week programme for people recovering from a cardiac event or heart surgery, or living with a heart condition. Sessions are led by British Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR) qualified instructors and tailored to each person, with regular health monitoring. Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund. Retired teacher Philip Sperinck, 67, says it has given him the motivation to keep improving: “They push you a little bit, but not too much,” he says.

The Wellbeing Chapter runs across Lincs Inspire Libraries and other community venues. The programme supports wellbeing through creativity, movement, reading and connection. Activities include chair based sessions, local history walks and free health checks.

In addition to Lincs Inspire’s  facilities in its leisure centres and libraries, other programmes of wellbeing support include Wellness to Work for supporting businesses and their employees, free public health checks, Weight Management programmes, Active Senior exercise and social sessions, weekly disability sessions, adapted gym equipment and many more.

A story of what’s possible

After losing his partner, Alastair Town, 56, was left feeling isolated and unsure of his purpose.

Going along to support his sister-in-law at Inclusive Sports sessions at Grimsby Health and Wellbeing Centre turned out to be the start of something much bigger. It led to volunteering, a leisure membership and a love of yoga and fitness classes.

The change in his mental wellbeing has been as striking as the physical benefits. “The classes have been transformative! I’ve been able to come off medication for mental health and anxiety because they’ve helped so much. The Yoga is therapeutic. I’ve found a calmness,” he said.

The people he’s met matter just as much. He added: “Before joining I’d become isolated, but the friends I’ve made here have helped me reconnect. The community already feels like a family.”

What began as a way to help someone else has given Alastair a regular reason to get out, try new things and rediscover where he belongs. He hopes that by sharing his story, he’ll encourage others to take their own first step.
