A man has been handed a large fine after being found to have abandoned a vehicle.

Nathan Lesley Brown, of Holmes Carr Road, New Rossington, Doncaster, did not attend the court hearing on Monday, 14 September, at Grimsby Magistrates Court, but was proven guilty in his absence.

He was ordered to pay a £660 fine; victim surcharge of £264 and legal costs of £200 – totalling £1124. The total cost must be paid within 28 days of the order.

The Council are responsible for dealing with abandoned cars and whilst it may not seem important, they are much more than just an eyesore.

They can cause several problems for residents and other drivers. Not only do they make areas look neglected, they also attract anti-social behaviour which leads to things like broken glass, fluids and potentially dangerous metal being on the streets.

Often, they are seen as targets for arson which has a negative impact on the environment and wildlife in the area – making them an important issue in the world of Environmental Enforcement.

Councillor Darren Mayne, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Recycling and Energy, said: “To many, this may not seem like an important issue, but if we leave these cars on the roads they can be the cause of a lot of issues for everyone.

“It’s important people understand that we don’t take this kind of offence lightly. The work the Environmental Enforcement carry out is equally important and will be dealt with appropriately.”
