A series of changes to parking and road markings in Grimsby town centre are set to improve the safety for local bus users, car users and the public.
George Street, Victoria Street West and Town Hall Street are all set to have changes made to loading and parking rules with improved bus stops on all three.
The proposed work would see parts of the area closed overnight, from 9pm-4am, with work starting Monday, 26 October, and lasting around three nights – weather dependent.
During this time, one lane of these roads will be closed with the other remaining open so traffic can still move through and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
In addition, loading bays, disabled parking and taxi ranks will be suspended during the works and all bus stops on Town Hall Street, Town Hall Square, George Street, Victoria Street West and Bethlehem Street will not be served by local bus services while the works are being delivered and local bus services will be diverted to temporary bus stops on Frederick Ward Way outside Home Bargains and Innoflate.
Ultimately, the changes are to ensure buses can pass safely through Grimsby town centre and that cars can park in a sensible area without running the risk of being damaged.
The works in detail include:
- All bus stops on the roads in question will be designated as bus stands, allowing services to remain for the time necessary to undertake required operational activities.
- Those with a blue badge who may be parking along Victoria Street West and George Street will no longer be allowed to with new disabled spaces being added on Victoria Street South – with a dedicated 1-hour parking space also included in these bays.
- Businesses will be able to use new defined loading bays along Victoria Street West once work is complete with another bay to be located opposite Dial Square, shortly before the left hand turn down Town Hall Street. This area will be split in two with one half being for loading and the other designated for taxis.
Councillor Paul Batson, Portfolio Holder for Transport, Housing and Infrastructure, said: “I appreciate these are large scale changes to a busy area of our town centre, but they are essential to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians alike.
“We often receive reports of near misses or buses being unable to drive around this area due to cars being parked in the way.
“Additionally, there are numerous car parks that have disabled bay parking all around Grimsby town centre, maintaining accessibility for those who need them.”
