Put it in a bin or take it home! North East Lincolnshire strewn with litter

North East Lincolnshire Council is calling on people to be responsible with their litter as the beach, parks and open spaces in the area have been left strewn with rubbish.

Glass bottles, cans, leftover picnics, takeaway wrappings and nappies are just some of the items being dumped by people. Food wrappers can also attract vermin.

There have also been people barbecuing on Cleethorpes beach – this is not allowed and is highly dangerous. The sand underneath the barbecue remains dangerously hot hours after it has gone out. Hot disposable barbecues should not be discarded in bins either.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said:

“Our parks and open spaces are cleaned regularly. The resort bins are emptied at least once a day, including a daily beach rake. If the beach is too busy to continue raking, staff will park up and litter pick instead.

“But it is the responsibility of individuals to keep our borough clean, green and tidy for everyone to be able to enjoy.

“We understand people want to make the most of the warm weather and enjoy a day out in the resort, but you must be responsible with your litter and respect our borough.

“We will not tolerate littering – it is an antisocial and criminal act. Where we have evidence of those responsible for littering, they face a fine of up to £200.

“Council officers are out in the community and, where offences are witnessed, are empowered to issue fixed penalty notices to offenders.

“There are more than 50 litter bins along Cleethorpes Prom, so there’s no excuse to leave rubbish on the beach. Please put your rubbish in a bin. If a bin is full, then take your rubbish home with you, or alternatively, you could try to reduce your waste by bringing reusable alternatives.

“We actively encourage people to recycle, but please do not put your rubbish into a plastic bag and discard of this in the recycling bin as it is contaminates the recycling.”

Cllr Shepherd added: “Please continue to follow Government guidelines and stay two metres apart from those not within your household when you are out and about. You can now meet up with up to six other people, but you must adhere to social distancing advice.”
