North East Lincolnshire Council has welcomed the news that figures of children excluded from full time education reduced in the 2018/19 academic year, against a backdrop of national increases.
The figures, which were released earlier this week by the Department of Education (DfE), reveal a 25% reduction in the number of children permanently excluded from schools in our area compared with the previous year’s figures.
Fixed term exclusions have also reduced in the area.
The figures take into account children in full time education in North East Lincolnshire up to the age of 16. Further Education providers offering education to 14-16 years olds are not included.
Other local authorities in the country have seen increases in their rates of exclusion.
Councillor Ian Lindley, portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said: “I welcome the drop in these figures. North East Lincolnshire has historically had some of the highest exclusion figures in the country.
“Every exclusion is a child missing out on their education, and we have always tried to work with education providers to find children the support that they need so that they don’t end up being excluded.
“All children and unique and face different challenges – not all enjoy or excel at school but it is vital that they are given the chance to take advantage and learn with the right support.
“These figures show that the work we’re doing with schools is working but we want to continue to get that figure down.
“I’m eager now to see children returning to school in September to continue their education following a prolonged period of disruption.”
