A SECTION of footpath along Grimsby’s Frederick Ward Way, either side of the Garth Lane work, will be closed temporarily from next week as final preparations for the new footbridge take place.

With the closure lasting for up to five weeks, the two main traffic islands in the centre of the carriageway will also be shut to pedestrians, to prevent them from crossing to the affected section of pathway. Diversions will direct people to crossings at either side of the works – outside West Haven Maltings or at the main junction with Peaks Parkway. For safety reasons the inside lane of Frederick Ward Way will also be closed to traffic.

This is to allow for the final low-noise piling work where the bridge will sit and will complete the abutments on either side. As reported, the permanent diversion along Alexandra Road will remain until the new bridge is installed, with the old structure lifted out in the autumn.

The work is part of the wider project to completely transform the Garth Lane area with the new bridge, new lighting, CCTV, seating, landscaping and paving. It is due to completed in March.

The project, which is being managed by ENGIE on behalf of North East Lincolnshire Council, is supported by £1.3m secured by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership from the Local Growth Fund as part of the Government’s commitment to the Northern Powerhouse. A further £2.2m has also been awarded by The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government with funding released as a result of the Grimsby Town Deal.
