North East Lincolnshire Council and its regeneration partner, ENGIE, are launching the draft design engagement survey as the first look at design and traffic management proposals are released.
The survey will be live from Monday 6 September until Friday 1 October.
Investigative works have taken place in recent weeks to gain greater understanding of the current condition of the bridge as engineers at ENGIE progress the detailed specification and planning works. First opened in 1925, the electrically powered Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge is Grade II Listed – defined as a building or structure that is of ‘special interest, warranting every effort to preserve it’.
Substantial Department of Transport funding specifically for this latest refurbishment has been awarded with the planned works including:
- Repairs to corroded steel parts and replacement of defective rivets and connections.
- Deep cleaning of all steel parts of the bridge, both above and below the bridge deck, including the structure supporting the control room.
- Removal and replacement of bridge deck plates and resurfacing.
- Drainage upgrades.
- Bridge waterproof replacement.
- Repair works to the substructure at each end of the bridge and the piers, supporting the main structure.
- Replacement of all bridge roller bearings.
- Undertake conservation works to the Control Room.
- Upgrade of electrical control system for the lifting mechanism.
- Re-painting of the whole bridge structure.
- Bridge lighting improvements.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport at North East Lincolnshire Council said: “I’m pleased we have now reached a stage where we are able to open up meaningful and detailed discussions about Corporation Road Bridge with residents and businesses as we move a step closer with the project and displaying our commitment to continually engage about the project with the community as it develops.
“Many of our key stakeholders and members of the Special Interest Group involved with the project are supportive of this scheme and I hope residents and businesses will take this opportunity to have their say and feed into the final design for this major refurbishment project.
“Corporation Road Bridge is a key landmark in Grimsby Town Centre and the Heritage Action Zone, these refurbishment works are going to safeguard this iconic landmark for many years to come and be a key contributor to the ongoing regeneration works in this area.”
The works are currently planned to start in January 2022 and will take up to 18 months to complete. As previously reported, due to the structural works required on the bridge a road closure will be required for the works.
The plans have also been submitted to the Planning Service for their approval and feedback, and along with engagement feedback, will be included into the final design.
The tender process to appoint a contractor is also planned to start in the coming weeks and will be appointed and announced later in the year.

The Corporation Road Bridge refurbishment is a £4.967m scheme – funded by £2.967m from the Department for Transport, £1.83m set aside by the Council and a further £170,000 from the Local Transport Fund.
