North East Lincolnshire Council has changed the way it receives stray dogs at its Doughty Road Depot in Grimsby.
The Council does not provide a 24-hour service for stray dogs at its depot. However, it does provide an acceptance point where dogs can be taken between 9am and 3pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 2pm on a Sunday or bank holiday.
Officers will undertake initial identity checks during these times, and where possible, owners will be notified and asked to collect their animal by appointment.
Where owners cannot be contacted and reunited with their dog during these times, the dog will be transferred into the care of NELC’s partners Sangreat Kennels, based in Scawby, near Brigg.
A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said:
“We’re currently refurbishing the Doughty Road Depot and no longer have indoor space to keep stray dogs overnight.
“Instead of keeping them onsite overnight, our staff will transfer them to Sangreat Kennels to be looked after at the end of each day.
“People can bring stray dogs to the Doughty Road Depot during the hours specified, but they won’t be kept on site overnight.
“Where owners cannot be contacted and reunited with their dog during the day, the dog will be transferred into the care of Sangreat Kennels.”
Fee changes
Fees for stray dogs have also changed. It now costs £75 if stray dog reunited from the Doughty Road Depot (including statutory fee) or £115 if stray dog taken to contracted kennels by officers (including statutory fee).

The Council can’t deal with stray dogs that are not contained or secured. If you have concerns about a dog’s welfare, please contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234999. Any dangerous dogs must be reported to Humberside Police on 101.
All stray dogs can be taken to Sangreat Kennels, Scawby, Brigg, DN20 9AA, or dropped off at the temporary acceptance point at the Doughty Road Depot. Please note that dogs will only be accepted during the times noted below:
Sangreat Kennels: 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays (except Christmas Day)
Doughty Road Depot, Grimsby, DN32 0LL: 9am to 3pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 2pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays (except Christmas Day)
Please ring Sangreat kennels beforehand on 01652 652453 to check if they can take the dog.
Should you find a dog straying outside of these hours, please call NELC on 01472 326300 after 9am the following day. You may also wish to try and contact local ‘lost and found’ websites/social media sites to see if you can find the owner.
Owners collecting their dog from either Doughty Road Depot or Sangreat Kennels will be charged a fee which must be paid before the dog is released.
Reporting lost dogs
To report your dog as lost then please complete the Council’s Lost dogs online form on the Stray and Lost Dogs section of its website, www.nelincs.gov.uk.
An officer will take details of your dog and contact you if the animal been found and brought to our kennels. Please also check the Sangreat Kennels website for details of animals already in their care.
