One lucky passenger on the Phone ‘n’ Ride bus service has won a luxury Christmas hamper, simply for using the service.

Eileen Borman from Immingham was the winner of the hamper, which included fresh items such as sausage rolls and cheeses, as well as chutney, plum bread, biscuits and chocolates.

The Phone ‘n’ Ride service ran a Christmas hamper competition throughout the end of November and through December.

Mrs Borman’s name was drawn out of 750 entrants to the competition – all of whom had been entered automatically when booking a journey with Phone ’n’ Ride and stating ‘shopping’ as the reason for their trip.

The competition has been run jointly by North East Lincolnshire Council and EQUANS. North East Lincolnshire’s Phone ‘n’ Ride Service is currently operated by Stagecoach East Midlands.

“I am thrilled to bits to win,” said Mrs Borman. “I am extremely happy and grateful on receiving the hamper in time for Christmas. It is a wonderful service. Since my eyesight has deteriorated, I have used the bus to take me shopping into Grimsby Town. The drivers are always very friendly and helpful.”

Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “Congratulations to Mrs Borman on winning the prize. It is great to hear how the door-to-door bus service supports residents who may struggle to travel on ordinary public transport.

“Phone ‘n’ Ride can be a lifeline for many people by making it easier for them to go about their everyday activities such as shopping, medical appointments, education, work and social events. The service plays a key part in providing other methods of transport for residents and visitors who are unable to use ordinary public transport.”

Lesley Jamieson, transport officer who organises the bus service, added: “The Phone ‘n’ Ride service is an ideal way for shoppers without access to conventional public transport to travel anywhere in the borough in an environmentally-friendly and convenient way.”

Unlike traditional bus services, Phone ‘n’ Ride, which has provided the service from 2005, has no fixed route or timetable. Passengers can book online or by telephone and say where they want to go.
