As part of the A180 works between Lockhill Roundabout and Westgate Roundabout, the whole stretch of road between the roundabouts is being resurfaced, a carriageway at a time, and the barriers in the central reservation are being replaced.
In order to do the resurfacing works on the eastbound side (the side heading towards Cleethorpes), the contraflow currently in place, which switches traffic to the other side of the bridge, needs to be extended.
A long contraflow needs to be introduced from Monday 21 September, which means there will be an overnight closure on Sunday 20 September from 8pm to change the traffic management around. Drivers should use an alternative route through Grimsby town centre to avoid this closure. As soon as the work to change the traffic management is completed, the road will be reopened to traffic.
Waterproofing work to the deck on the Eastbound side is well underway, and the longer contraflow will come into place when that is complete. The change to traffic management is expected to be in place for up to two weeks.
Once the resurfacing work has been completed, the traffic management will be changed for further phases of work including the installation of new central reservation barriers.
The project is due to be completed by early November 2026, and further information about changes to traffic management will be released when it is available.
During the long contraflow, there are likely to be delays during core commuting hours in this stretch of road and the approaches from Cleethorpe Road, the A180 Eastbound and Victoria Street North in Grimsby.
The Council asks that people try to plan their journeys outside core commuting hours, or avoid the area if possible.
