Latest figures from North East Lincolnshire’s allotment service show a surge in new allotment plot holders during lockdown.
Between April and June, 80 new plot holders joined North East Lincolnshire’s allotments, compared to 20 new plot holders that joined during the same period last year.
Reacting to the news, Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “It’s fantastic to see local people have chosen to re-connect with nature and try their hand with an allotment plot during the COVID-19 lockdown.
“As a former plot holder myself, I’m fully aware of the benefits having an allotment plot can bring alongside the amazing community spirit. It’s great to see allotments still have a role to play for local people.
“I would urge anyone who enjoys the outdoors, would like to improve their health and wellbeing or even just would like to try growing their own produce to get in contact with the allotment service today.”
North East Lincolnshire Council owns the following allotments, which are managed by the council’s regeneration partner, ENGIE:
- Carr Lane Allotments, Cleethorpes – entrance off Lestrange Street and Beeley Road
- Littlecoates Allotments, Grimsby – entrance off Lister Street
- Peaksfield Allotments, Grimsby – entrance off Weelsby Avenue
- Saltings Allotments, Grimsby – entrance off Littlefield Lane
- Springfield Allotments, Scartho – entrance off Springfield Road
- Weelsby Allotments, Grimsby – entrance off Garton Grove
- Winchester Allotments, Grimsby – entrance off Laceby Road
