Armed Forces Day each June represents one of the borough’s largest annual events, requiring months of detailed preparation and planning by the Armed Forces Major Engagement Team (AFMET). For more than twelve years, this volunteer-led organisation has successfully delivered Armed Forces Weekend, generating millions of pounds in commercial benefit for the borough and significantly boosting the local visitor economy.
This year, the national Armed Forces Day event returned to the resort, attracting large crowds throughout the weekend and injecting hundreds of thousands of pounds into the local economy.
Work has already begun on Armed Forces Day 2026, which is set to look slightly different as the event coincides with major regeneration works in the centre of Cleethorpes. The 2026 Armed Forces Weekend will take place on 27–28 June.
“The resort was extremely busy throughout this year’s Armed Forces Weekend, and it was fantastic to see such strong support from both local residents and visitors for our armed forces communities,” said Alex Baxter, Managing Director of AFMET, the community interest company that delivers the event on behalf of the borough.
“However, we know that in 2026 there will be significant regeneration works underway across central Cleethorpes, so we are starting preparations early. We are already working closely with the local authority and our blue-light partners to understand what the art of the possible looks like for next year’s event.”
With Pier Gardens unavailable due to improvement works, AFMET is planning alternative layouts and locations. “The stands normally based in Pier Gardens will need to be relocated as a minimum,” Mr Baxter explained. “We are exploring the use of the Boating Lake area and paddock—similar to our successful layout during the National Event in 2016—as well as continuing to use Lower Kingsway and the Meridian Events Arena.”
Subject to sponsorship and funding, the 2026 event is expected to retain its key attractions, including the big wheel, flying displays, land-based exhibitions, and the traditional parade—although changes to positioning and layout will be necessary.
“The whole weekend is about celebrating our armed forces communities and families and saying thank you for their service,” Mr Baxter added. “We work throughout the year with our blue-light colleagues to ensure the event is delivered safely. With the additional challenges next year, even more preparation is needed, and we are grateful for the continued support of all partners who help bring this event to life.” Organisations or businesses interested in sponsoring part of the 2026 event are encouraged to contact the team via email: [email protected].
