Work on an unused piece of land between New Cartergate and Frederick Ward Way will be done during 2026

About the project

The New Cartergate project is set to improve an overgrown, unlit and largely unused area in the centre of our town. It is the triangle piece of land that sits between New Cartergate and Frederick Ward Way.

The new design will incorporate more open space and low-level shrubbery which will be easy to maintain, as well as providing new seating, lighting, and a ground-level maze which ties into recent upgrades to St James Square and Garth Lane. This will create a family-friendly space to be enjoyed on journeys to and from South Parade School.

As part of the project, some nearby pedestrian crossing points will also be improved to support safer movement around the area.

The works start on Monday 2 February, and are likely to last approximately 10 weeks.
