A car has been seized and several warnings issued to drivers in Cleethorpes thanks to partnership working between the Council and the police.
CCTV operatives aided officers in Cleethorpes following reports of vehicles being driven in an anti-social manner on the evening of Saturday, 6 December.
Thanks to the use of the numerous CCTV cameras in the area, the public were kept safe from those deemed to be driving in an anti-social manner.
In total, one car was seized, 12 Section 59 notices were served and there are roughly 60 other offences being investigated. A Section 59 notice is giving to those driving in a manner which causes distress, annoyance or alarm. They last for a year and, if breached, can result in the vehicle being seized.
Investigations like these are part of a wider approach called Op Snap, ran by Humberside Police.
This allows members of the public to submit video evidence of driving offences. Its main purpose is to improve road safety and to prosecute those that place others at risk. Thanks to the Council’s CCTV system, which was introduced in 2022 as part of a £2.25 million overhaul, Humberside Police were able to capture more offences being committed.
Councillor Ron Shepherd, Portfolio Holder for Safe and Stronger Communities, said: “This is a fantastic result and shows just how strong a partnership we have with the police.
“These vehicles were being driven dangerously and were causing a risk to public safety, something which the Council values above everything else.
“I would like to thank colleagues in the police and in the CCTV control room who worked tirelessly to prevent anyone from being injured or seriously hurt.
“This is the perfect example of our zero-tolerance policy. Cleethorpes and the rest of this borough is a safe place for residents and visitors and we will continue to ensure this through enforcement of those who challenge that.”
Police Constable Andy Place, lead for Operation Snap, said: “Every piece of footage submitted by the public through Operation Snap helps us take action against dangerous drivers and plays a vital role in making our roads safer.
“The online service enables us to handle footage from members of the public securely and efficiently, making the investigation process straightforward.
“Thanks to partnership work such as the CCTV footage provided by North East Lincolnshire Council through Op Snap, we are able to better identify and target antisocial behaviour on our roads.
“Operation Snap has one clear aim, to make our roads safer.”
