Grimsby born and bred? Proud of your hometown? Want to celebrate all the brilliant things going on? Then take part in this year’s Great Grimsby Charter Day.

With a flag raising, exhibition and even a town crier event, there really is a lot going on!

Held on March 11, the day celebrates when, in 1201, King John and his royal entourage witnessed the sealing of the borough’s first Royal Charter. At the time, Grimsby was one of only seven places in England to have been granted this document, which defined the rights and privileges of the town, enabling it to govern itself and set its own taxes, essentially paving the way for local democracy and societal systems.

This was 14 years before the landmark signing of the Magna Carta, which is seen as one of the most important documents in Great British history.

The start of the day will be marked by a flag raising at the Town Hall hosted by Mayor of the Borough of North East Lincolnshire, Cllr Janet Goodwin. Inside is the Royal Connection exhibition which will be held in the Bremerhaven Room from 10am-4pm, documenting photographs, documents and artefacts showcasing the most important milestones in the town’s history.

Additionally, the Grimsby, Cleethorpes and District Civic Society are looking for a Town Crier to help spread the word about Great Grimsby Day with applicants being judged on vocal power, delivery and interpretation. For more details, visit https://grimsbyice.co.uk/grimsbyday2026.html

Whilst looking back at Grimsby’s past, it is also a day to celebrate what the future holds for the town too.

From the steel structure being built for the Freshney Place development to the opening of the Horizon Youth Zone, the future is bright for this town and it’s important we celebrate every success.

Leader of the Council, Philip Jackson, said: “This is a momentous day every year for our town. The celebrations are made even more important with the ongoing regeneration in the town centre.

“We are successfully diversifying Grimsby with the construction of the new cinema, state-of-the-art market as well as the new food and leisure facilities.

“There are so many things to be proud about and this day is perfect for showcasing exactly what Grimsby is all about.”
